2019, people are calling it a year of change, a time to reflect on yourself and improve on you deepest most desired goals. Among them the usual: working out, eating healthier and getting good grades. I wanted to share a way to get it done and stay motivated, without giving up in a month. The first step in any goal-oriented journey is having your real reason for doing it set and having a why before thinking of the how. For Example, the reason for losing weight is never "just because", think deeply on the effects it would have on your life and a possible positive outcome, this will help you decide on why you truly want to do it. This is step one.
Step two - if having that drive still cannot conquer your willpower, time to take yourself out of the driver's seat. Have somebody else help guide or even do it with you i.e. a bet with friends, a group chat tracking a group's progress, personal training, the list goes on.
Step three is the final and most difficult part of keeping a resolution or goal and that is mistakes. A countless number of people set the penalty for little mistakes more severe that the goal itself, hindering your performance. The most common way I see this is with a goal like losing weight. Don't punish yourself by skipping meals or increasing the strictness if you break your diet plan rules. Understand that blips will happen and now are in the past. The only direction in life is forwards, nobody can go back.
The last point I will mention in this article is small goals, things like drawing more, using a planner for getting work done on time, taking more photos etc. These are often excused with "I just don't have the time" or "I cant seem to stop procrastinating". Think about yourself as humanity was thousands of years ago - running on instinct, our brains don't want to take the hard route and will try to convince you otherwise as fast as possible, even now. With that in mind I encourage you to check out Mel Robbins' '5 second rule', this is an amazing speech of a technique used to "hack" your brain into getting things done the hard way. Simply put, count down from 5 and when you reach 0 have already started the task you wanted to do, run and grab your camera before you leave, walk out of your favorite snack aisle or even get started on that work project.
With all that good luck to you, Happy New Year and I hope that all this will help you in succeeding in 2019. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, GO!
