So you made it to a new country or city and have planned all of these exciting things but they suddenly get canceled, what do you do? Most people would complain on the internet, but what you should be doing is realizing that one of the greatest joys of visiting a new place is appreciating small local pleasures - the really genuine experiences on offer. There are plenty of websites like Airbnb which give you access to fun events coming directly from locals and allow you to experience something a little less by the (guide)book.
For example, me and my family went to Mexico and met a restaurant owner who gave us amazing food (Puerto Vallarta, Rainforest Café). We realized he also gave boat fishing tours and because of that we heard so many fun stories about the city and had a better understanding of places to go based on his recommendations. He knew a lot more than the typical tourist information.
Another example would be in Australia. We are lucky enough to have relatives in Perth (west coast) and decided to go there. Going out for a morning run we stopped at a local café and met this really kind man from South Africa. We drank coffee at his café every day discussing coffee and the many fun things to look out for in Australia. Not only that but we learnt that on the west coast you can take a boat to take a selfie with a quoka :)
The list goes on and on and on with how many amazing places I have found over the years by just walking aimlessly around a town or city. Here are some photos of things we found on accident or things we found through talking to locals.
